Materials for building kayaks

Materials varied over the years in building kayaks. Greenland kayaks, built in a land with few trees, were constructed from and covered in sealskin. Rob Roy was made from (?) plywood or veneer; Boats in 1930’s – early ’60’s were from stringers of XX and cross sections of YY; covered in various types of canvas , often ‘doped’ to be more waterproof.

GRP – ‘glassfibre’.

“Shoeboxing”

Getting a robust, watertight join between deck and hull is important, and varies across the different materials and construction methods.

With GRP, the deck fitted over the hull; then was screwed through to a wooden inner gunwale; and sealed with GRP tape on the outside
